Evergreen Aquatics To Celebrate B-Day With Olympic Medalists Aug. 27th

White Center’s Evergreen Community Aquatics Center will be celebrating its one-year anniversary with an appearance by two Olympic Medalists and a public open swim on Saturday, Aug. 27th.

The public is invited to come meet Olympic Medalist Margaret Holzer and US National Swim Team Member David Cromwell, who will show medals and sign autographs free at Evergreen Pool. Margaret Holzer is a Seattle-area resident and two-time USA National Champion who swam in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, bringing home three medals from Beijing to the United States. Also meeting members of the public will be record-holding Missoula native and former USA National Swim Team Member, David Cromwell.

“We do have some swimmers with Olympic dreams here at ECAC. But more importantly, we hope to inspire kids in White Center that dreams are possible on any scale”, said Joel Schweiger, General Manager of ECAC and Head Coach of WhiteWater Aquatics. “We wanted to mark one year of service to the community by honoring swimmers at all levels. Although we have a number of fast swimmers, we are equally proud of those who have learned to swim for the first time at ECAC this year”, continued Schweiger. ECAC staff will have fall swim lesson registration open and swimming instructors available for questions.

The public swim will happen from Noon – 1 p.m., and will cost $1.

“We choose one dollar to mark one year. We want to make sure that the community knows we offer great swimming programs year round, and how family friendly our lesson program is. We will have our challenges going forward with an old building. Pools are challenging to operate, yet, it’s been a great year. We are really glad to be serving White Center”, concluded Schweiger.

About Evergreen Community Aquatic Center
Over a year ago, The Highline School District reached agreement with a community group to operate a closed pool in White Center, which was renamed The Evergreen Community Aquatics Center (ECAC). Since that time hundreds of subsidized swim lessons have been attended by area youth. Now home to The Highline Pirates, Evergreen/Tyee and WhiteWater Swim Teams the aquatic center is also used by scuba groups, senior exercise programs, water polo teams and Burien’s Parks and Recreation Department. In addition to swim lessons and swim teams, The ECAC has partnered with community groups for outreach, including SHAG (The Senior Housing Assistance Group), New Futures, and Burien’s Camp Craze Youth Programs. The pool is owned by The Highline School District, and leased to WWAM, a nonprofit subsidiary of WhiteWater Aquatics.
