Next White Center Chamber Luncheon will be at Soul Kitchen Tuesday

The next White Center Chamber of Commerce luncheon will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12, from Noon – 1:30 p.m. at the new Soul Kitchen Restaurant located at the corner of Roxbury and 16th Ave SW.

“We will announce and discuss a new Chamber-encouraged effort to try a weekly luncheon outreach program to serve our chronic homeless alcoholic population in White Center,” said Chamber President Mark Ufkes. “Outreach to the homeless, bringing them a short walk away from the business district, can allow them to meet folks who want to support them to recovery, while getting a weekly hot meal every Friday. Our goal is to help minimize the negative impacts of their lives in the business district (if there are any) and tell folks that White Center can continue to do our part to help address these types of community challenges.”

Ufkes added:

“This idea is one segment of a plan that has been developing through community outreach and discussion at monthly Homeless Summit meetings hosted by several local churches and Westside Baby, and encouraged by several members of the White Center Chamber board including, Mac McElroy (Mac’s Triangle Pub), Frank Cantwell (Holy Family School), and Aileen Sison (John L. Scott Realty).

A local restaurant in the heart of White Center has agreed to provide food for 40 individuals, once a month, for six months to help us try this idea. The first luncheon will be served on Friday, March 8, 2013.

Hope that you can join us for lunch and learn more about our effort. And feel free to invite others. We order off the menu.

Soul Kitchen’s address is 9600 16th Ave SW; (206) 762-2729.

…does not sound like a safe and sane idea, given the prior problems of a WC soup kitchen….why not welcome a smaller group to the group members’ homes?

Hi. I am still trying to find out Why the White Center Chamber is no longer with the national chamber. Did they get kicked out or did Mark with draw them? Either one is bad for white center. Also I thought the chambers by laws were to promote and move white center forward. Mark seems to think their primary job is to care for the home less.. It is bad that there are home less people around but bigger governments and operations are working on it and it is a long ways from the WCC to be trying to solve the problem.i

…couldn’t have said it better myself Stander…Thank you.

…do these homeless have dual diagnosis, are the mentally stable to be in a public place, do they have any transmittable or infectious disease that needs to be addressed before they are in family restaurants. I remember Holy Family trying this same unsafe idea, the sheriff was on standby, there was syringe found, there was a violent outbreak, and this was set in the SCHOOL portion. Where is the reasonling to protect and progress our WC citizens. Maybe Mark would step down from the Chamber of Commerce and volunteer and the shelters downtown. I feel bad for the homeless, but most are homeless because of issues other than just down on their luck.

  5. Dollarsfordollars says: did Mark get his position at WCC? Is there any other candidates who could step up please and work to keep WC in a positive light and leave social services to, well, social services.

Mark got elected the 1st time because no one else would step up and run. He got elected the 2nd time because him and all his cronies rewrote the WCCs constitution and by laws to suit their needs and made a lot of changes to try and get more money and to stop the citizens that were trying to police him. Also he has used the chamber to better his position against annexation and will now try to use it to get Seattle to annex area Y. Some one needs to keep their eye on him because many of the things he does is against the new constitution and by laws that he and his gang wrote. You will notice that he has done a great job of getting people to stop paying their dues and to promote his ideas for white center. Also he has managed to get the local office closed and most of the action sent to his Email or their new $10,000 dollar site Which looks good but is almost worthless.During the Burien annexation deal he went on record to say he did not want to annex any place and wanted to stay as the diversified area that was homey and to his liking. Since that time he has bad mouthed Burien in a lot of questionable or out right false information in preparation to push for annexation to Seattle. If the voters would have checked the facts and figures that they quoted as to the higher costs to go to Burien they would have found most had no basis. Good luck but keep your eye on him he is starting his move to annex to Seattle.

Hey. Dollarsfordollars. I wrote an article about how Mark got his job at the WCC. I gave a lot of facts that people seem to over look when it comes to his accomplishments and actions and it got deleted? All I can say is keep your eye on him as what he says is not what he does. And most of it is very questionable. Check with some of old members of the chamber that have with drawn and you will get a good idea of the problem. This will probably be deleted also? Good Luck.

…Stander, thank you for your diligence in bringing this to light. I would like to read the article, could you pleae direct me to it?

As a board member of the chamber of commerce, firstly, you should know there is a shift in leadership. Just recently Mark’s 3 year term ended and new president Aileen Sison is getting aquatinted.

With that said, I encourage you to come to the meetings and express those ideas and feelings. I can promise you, one of my personal goals of being in the chamber will to increase the engagement in community input and action.

We can’t though say a group is no good when we have absolutely no connection to it though. @dollarsfordollars and by stander…

What are your ideas to make it a better chamber? Do you know what our actual title allows us to do? Are you part of the chamber? Do you know anyone you can refer that could contribute? I encourage you to come meet many of the new members and definitely bring up some of these topics. I know we’re completely open to evolving and become a better organization serving White Center’s Business district and all around community.

Mark’s intention with this is directly related to businesses. As a business owner myself, I can tell you it can be an issue dealing with some of the homeless issues. From public perception that can prevent customers coming to our area to vandalism and more. With that said, what I appreciate about Mark’s intentions is that it exhibits compassion with actual effort in helping out the community AND the business owners. We are still discussing this event and what to do with it. We know this will be much more effective with community partners, which… we have many who have said something has to get done. Lots of logistics will take place in making this happen.. if we all decide it should… but I know there will be professionals that will know how to organize it and the investment could potentially really help White Center.

I will leave you with a challenge to learn a little more about the White Center Chamber, to check out our website (which… the chamber along with he CDA got a grant and created the website and is allowing every business in White Center for be part of at NO COST), or come to one of these meetings,

Be critic, be involved and care…. but using a forum such as this to express so many opinions and generalize a group is not the most efficient way to express concerns and be part of the change.

By Stander and Dollarfordollars are Blog Trolls. In Internet slang, a troll (pron.: /ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is someone who posts inflammatory,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussionWikipedia. This is how the Urban Dictionary describes them, A depraved individual who sits in front of a computer all day and posts flames of an idiotic or pseudo-intellectual nature on public forums and private websites. Many of these people actually become emotional about what is said on the afore-said mediums and feel it is their duty to punish those who disagree with them. They too may pursue this object in an obsessive-compulsive manner.

They roam from blog to blog and change their names or have several names. Don’t feed the trolls.
