Bill Maas, beloved White Center Upholsterer, passes away; service Sat.

Bill Maas, longtime and beloved upholsterer at White Center Glass and Upholstery, passed away Oct. 29.

A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held this Saturday, Nov. 18 at 11a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1024 Monroe Ave. NE in Renton.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife – the love of his life – Elaine.

A longtime friend of Bill’s said this week “At least twenty times over the years, Bill walked across the street to my shop on my birthday and sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to me, laughing, start to finish.”

“Bill was a huge New York Yankees fan,” the friend continued. “We would make friendly bets whenever the Yankees played the Mariners. Bill, somehow, almost always won. So one day I suggested we raise the stakes to five dollars.” Bill responded: “No, I can’t. My wife made me promise not to bet more than one dollar per game.”

A few years ago The B-Town Blog and White Center Blog shot a promotional video at White Center Glass and Upholstery. In it you see blog staffer Bart Bryan stymied and lost. Suddenly Bill Maas appears and good-naturedly guides Bart through the wonders of Bill’s place of employment.

Bart “pilfers” a soft drink from the company refrigerator. Bill discovers this and famously rolls his eyes and bemoans: “Oh, jeez! Now I gotta count the Frescas!”

Be sure and watch the outtakes at the very end of the video!:

Bill will be missed.

So, sometime this weekend we should all pay tribute to Bill by going to our refrigerator, grabbing a can of soda, opening it up and toasting Bill – and Elaine – with a “Freshca!”
