Coming Home: Why I’m Running for Public Office

By Joe Nguyen

I’m running today because I want everyone to have the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.

The day I announced that I was running for office, I doorbelled in Greenbridge, near where I grew up. On that day and every day since then, I’ve knocked on doors of a lot of old friends, classmates, and teachers. We’d catch up and reminisce about the past for a bit—the old hangout spots near Cascade Middle School, how my mom is doing, which teachers are still at Kennedy, what we’ve been up to since however long ago, and so on.

But I didn’t start campaigning to take walks down memory lane. With everyone I spoke to, we talked about the future—the future we want. From addressing the homelessness crisis to the recent rise in hate crimes to public safety concerns, people voiced their thoughts on issues they face in their community. Many were issues I still remember from years ago, neglected and left to fester.

When my family came to this country as refugees, we were able to settle in Burien (and later White Center) because of good public policy and were able to thrive because of a great community. It was still an uphill battle, but we kept in our minds the image of the American Dream and we made it to the other side.

From Olympia, I will fight for every person, every child, every community in this district and in this state.

I’ll keep our state government accountable to the people, not to corporations. Politics shouldn’t be about careers funded by corporate PAC money. Politics should be about your daughter, your son, your brother, your wife, your aunt, your cousin, your friend, your neighbor, and you.

I’ll make sure the government is efficient with your tax money. I’ll bring my experience as a project manager handling multi-million dollar projects to keep our public needs well-funded, from public education to transit to job creation.

I was born and raised right here, in the district. This is the community that raised me and gave me a voice. I’m paying forward what I’ve been given by the community that made it possible for me—a community of struggling yet hardworking families, of children growing into their potential to impact the future, of neighbors who confide to one another of their hopes for change.

This is my home, but it is also home to many who only seek a better life, the best life, for themselves and their families.

We’ll fill this home with dreams, and fight to make them a reality.

Joe Nguyen is the first candidate I have been excited to vote for in a very long time, and the fact that he was born and raised right here in Burien and White Center makes him all the more qualified.
