Buddhist memorial rites will be held this Friday and Saturday for Kenney Bui, the TEC/Evergreen High School senior who died Monday as the result of head injuries suffered during a football game at Highline Memorial Stadium on Friday, Oct. 2. The public is welcome to pay respects and offer condolences to the family throughout the day: Friday, October 9: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, October 10: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. However, no formal service will be held. **The family requests no cameras at the funeral home** Respects can be done at Columbia Funeral Home, which is located at 4567 Rainier Avenue South in Seattle. Free concert, film about native son Richard Hugo will be at Fieldhouse Oct. 11
The famed native-son poet Richard Hugo will be given a jazzy tribute on Sunday evening, Oct. 11, at the White Center Fieldhouse (1321 SW 102nd Street), sponsored by the Southwest Seattle Historical Society, and funded by 4Culture. Named after one of Hugo's poems, “Some Places Are Forever Afternoon: A Tribute in Music, Words and Film to White Center’s Richard Hugo” will begin at 6 p.m. Admission is free. White Center Deputy Dan Shaw honors career with final class act at retirement
Dan Shaw, who worked as a King County Sheriff's deputy in White Center for the last 27 years, completed his final service to the community by feeding the homeless. The Sheriff’s Office hired Shaw in 1988 after he left the US Air Force. Shaw happily worked the vast majority of his career serving the citizens of White Center. On Aug. 23, his last day as a deputy, Shaw bought eight buckets of chicken and all of the sides to feed the homeless in the community where he loved to work. Longtime community advocate Irish McKinney was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident in California on Monday, Aug. 17. Irish was well-known to the White Center/Burien-area as both an avid Harley rider as well as a tireless fundraiser for the needy, raising over $26,000 for the White Center Food Bank in the last few years, including $15,000 last year, according to Sean Robinson.
