White Center Deputy Dan Shaw honors career with final class act at retirement
Dan Shaw, who worked as a King County Sheriff's deputy in White Center for the last 27 years, completed his final service to the community by feeding the homeless. The Sheriff’s Office hired Shaw in 1988 after he left the US Air Force. Shaw happily worked the vast majority of his career serving the citizens of White Center. On Aug. 23, his last day as a deputy, Shaw bought eight buckets of chicken and all of the sides to feed the homeless in the community where he loved to work. Holy Family Street Fair will be the weekend of Sept. 12 – 13
The 2015 Holy Family Street Fair will be held Saturday, Sept. 12 and Sunday, Sept. 13. Every year lots of people attend from the White Center, Burien and other adjacent areas and different cultures and styles are represented. There is an entertainment program that includes music and dance performances, karaoke, kid games and more. Longtime community advocate Irish McKinney killed in motorcycle accident
Longtime community advocate Irish McKinney was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident in California on Monday, Aug. 17. Irish was well-known to the White Center/Burien-area as both an avid Harley rider as well as a tireless fundraiser for the needy, raising over $26,000 for the White Center Food Bank in the last few years, including $15,000 last year, according to Sean Robinson. Lakewood Park may be renamed after longtime advocate Dick Thurnau
Working with several community groups, King County Councilmember Joe McDermott is proposing an ordinance that would rename White Center's Lakewood Park in honor of its longtime advocate, the late Dick Thurnau. Thurnau – who passed away in May, 2014 – had been a friend, mentor and “car go to guy” in the White Center community for many. He also formed "Friends of Hicklin Lake" with the help of his partner, Marcia Wollam, advocating to clean up the lake water as well as petitioning successfully to rename the lake to honor original settler Leonard Hicklin.
