Checks presented to White Center & Highline Food Banks from Empty Bowls
Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 12) two checks – for $8,160 each – were presented to both the Highline Area and White Center Food Banks from Organizers from the "Empty Bowls" fundraiser, held Jan. 31 at the Burien Community Center. This was the 9th annual event, and was sponsored by Burien Parks as well as Discover Burien. In addition to presenting the checks, the annual Empty Bowls "Best Soup" award was given to Elliott Bay Brewhouse Chef David Bunniel and Francisco Herreia. Help a family whose White Center area home was destroyed by fire
Sunday morning (Jan. 26) around 7:15 a.m., Eileen Riddle was awakened by some loud popping noises in her home near White Center. As she left her bedroom to investigate, she found her garage engulfed in flames. She and her daughter, Catherine, were able to get her terminally ill husband, Greg, as well as the family dog out of their house safely. The fire started in the garage and raged quickly into the attic, not setting off smoke alarms. Second Annual White Center 5K: Superhero Run will be Saturday, Mar. 22
The White Center Community Development Association (CDA) is partnering with the YES Foundation of White Center and the White Center Food Bank to host the second annual White Center 5K Walk & Run on Saturday, March 22. This community event will run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at White Center Heights Park. The theme of this year’s 5K is a Superhero Run, and all participants are encouraged to dress up as their favorite superheroes! UPDATE: Evergreen Pool, threatened by possible closure, will remain open
The non-profit Evergreen Pool, which serves the greater Highline area and that had been threatened with closure (read our previous coverage here), will remain open thanks to a combination of community and government support. Highline Schools Foundation awards record amount of classroom grants
The Highline Schools Foundation recently awarded a record $48,675 through 77 classroom grants at 35 different schools in the Highline School District. A total of 124 grant requests were received. “The grant applications were more thoughtful and innovative than ever,” said Ashley Fosberg, Executive Director of the Foundation. “Applicants put a great deal of effort into making sure their ideas aligned with the Highline Public Schools Strategic Plan—were impressed and inspired!
