4Culture, King County’s cultural services agency is seeking artists to help bring public art to the redesigned White Center Ponds, a stormwater facility and green space undergoing major improvements.
The application deadline is Thursday, April 23, 2026.
The organization is partnering with King County’s Water and Land Resources Division to select five artists to create two dimensional banner designs that will be displayed along walkways at the White Center site, according to program details.
Each selected artist will receive $10,000 for site specific research and design development, with additional funding available for digital file preparation and optional community engagement work.
The project is part of a broader redesign of the White Center Ponds, located east of downtown White Center and west of Greenbridge, stretching from Southwest Roxbury Street to Southwest 100th Street between 11th and 12th Ave SW.
King County officials said the redesign aims to transform the site from an underperforming stormwater facility into a safer, more welcoming community space with improved water quality and expanded public access.
The selected artists will explore the site’s ecology, history and diverse community while developing designs that may also reflect themes of health and climate resilience. Each artist will create five related banner designs that will be printed and displayed multiple times across the site for a yearlong exhibition.
The banners will be installed on light poles along new walking paths planned as part of the redesign, which also includes native plantings, habitat improvements and gathering spaces.
According to project information, the White Center Ponds function as a stormwater treatment system that collects runoff from roads and pavement, allowing pollutants to settle and be filtered by plants before cleaner water flows into nearby lakes and ultimately Puget Sound.
4Culture said it will manage fabrication and installation of the artwork, making the project accessible to emerging artists or those new to public art.
