SUMMARY:Alki Beach Polar Bear Plunge will be Sunday\, Jan. 1
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Alki Polar Bear Plunge/Swim will be held on Sunday\, Jan. 1\, 2023\, starting at 10 a.m. sharp at Alki Beach in West Seattle. \nPlungers will meet at Alki Beach across from Duke’s Chowder House (map below). \n“We spread out up and down the beach with those we love and adore next to us\, and after a count down from 10\, 9\, 8 …\, we hold hands\, start screaming and laughing\, and run madly into the water as if our lives depend on it\,” longtime participant Mark Ufkes said. “As always\, we go into the water at 10 a.m. sharp\, so don’t be late.” \nHere’s more from Ufkes: \nLife gets better each year\, and there is\, and always will be\, a benefit to celebrating this reality. Since the beginning of time\, humans all over the world have held ceremony at the New Year. It is an opportunity to reflect on the year that has passed and wash away the many frustrations and injuries that the previous year demanded of us. \nAnd for us optimists out there\, and those in our circle who suffer from our perpetually positive outlook\, it is a chance to ask the Universe\, in all its awe\, for guidance and strength to make the New Year more significant than the previous one. \nSome call our annual Alki Polar Bear Swim “the great washing.” Others call it the most challenging family-oriented adventure of the year. And for a few\, it is simply another example that all of us humans have mild insanity and a need to prove it to an adoring crowd of fans who watch from the sidewalk. \nLast year over 500 met at Alki for our grand entry into 47 degree Puget Sound. We were in and out of the water so fast that it was all over in less than a minute. And another crowd of hundreds watched and cheered as we proved again how great it is to be alive\, in this still great city\, and still great Democratic nation (even though many extreme Republicans seem to want to destroy it). \nBring good water shoes\, a large towel\, and warm clothes to dress in afterwards. And as always\, bring your hopes and dreams for the New Year and they will come true! \nOTHER LOCAL POLAR BEAR PLUNGES (do ’em all!): \n\n\n\nNEW: 10 a.m.: Des Moines Beach Park\n10 a.m. Alki Beach\nNEW: 11 a.m.: Normandy Park Cove\nNoon: Three Tree Point South Beach\nNoon: Angle Lake in SeaTac\n\n\n\nThe plunge will take place across from Duke’s in the 2500 block of Alki Ave SW:

SUMMARY:Splash into the New Year at Three Tree Point Polar Bear Plunge
DESCRIPTION:Photo from the 2022 Polar Bear Plunge by Jana Kleitsch\nBurien’s annual Polar Bear Plunge will return to the south beach of Three Tree Point on Sunday\, Jan. 1\, 2023 at Noon\, and all are invited. \nThis annual tradition is meant to help people splash into the New Year and cleanse themselves of negative thoughts\, bad vibes\, icky hangovers\, or just to have a fun\, silly start to 2023. \nEach year\, one costumed participant is chosen by secret judges and awarded the coveted Polar Bear Plunge trophy\, which is basically a polar bear sculpture on a piece of local driftwood. Last year’s defending champ was local Blake Olsen\, 13\, who was dressed in a bright red Santa suit (HINT: a funny costume is great\, but so is exuberance and humor…). \n \nThe event will be held at the south\, public beach of Three Tree Point (map below) at Noon – snow\, rain\, clouds\, wind chill\, ice storm or sun – nothing stops us rugged Northwesterners! \nTIPS/PRECAUTIONS\nPrecautions include wearing some kind of footwear to protect your soles from sharp rocks and shells\, bringing big towels or blankets for afterwards\, as well as plenty of courage\, joy and your own support crew. \nVIDEOS\nBelow is the raw\, live stream video of last year’s plunge that we shared on The B-Town Blog’s Facebook page (be sure to “Like” us there to get a notification for when we go live)good : \n \nThe 2020 plunge (it was canceled in 2021): \n \nAnd a POV shot showing Shawn Anderson take the 2018 plunge: \n \nA good location to meet before and/or after is at the newly-reopened historic Three Tree Point Store\, located at 16957 Maplewild Ave SW.
