The King County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigation Unit (FIU) this week announced that the suspect in an arson fire at Yarrington’s Funeral Home in the 10700 block of 16th Ave SW in White Center pleaded guilty:

“Thanks to outstanding investigative work by detectives with the King County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigation Unit (FIU) and others, we are pleased to share this follow-up to the July 8th, 2020 arson fire at the former location of Yarrington’s Funeral Home in the 10700 blk. 16th Ave SW in White Center (map below).

“Matthew Hicks, the 36-year old suspect arrested in this case, pleaded guilty on April 27, 2021 in King County Superior Court, to commercial burglary and arson. Hicks has remained in the King County Jail since his July 2020 arrest on more than $200,000 bail. His final sentence is pending.

“This nearly 13,000 square foot building, assessed at over $800,000, was a complete loss. The impact of arson in any community cannot be measured. Today’s plea helps bring closure for everyone touched by the Yarrington fire.

“We thank our FIU detectives and the other professionals for their work in this important case.”
