Volunteers are needed to help the White Center Food Bank, and here’s how YOU can pitch in:

The local food bank is looking for anyone interested who is free Mondays from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., or Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Volunteers usually work in shifts of 2-4 hours.

Here are where their highest needs are:

    • Grocery Rescue
Rescue food from grocery stores to provide diverse food options for customers as they shop at the food bank. Volunteers in this role take a food bank van out and drive a specified route with a partner to pick up food. In 2020, 31% of the food we provided our customers came from Grocery Rescue! Hours are Monday through Friday 9-11:30am, and volunteers are needed to help weekly for at least 3 months. Vacations are totally allowed – we just ask that you let us know in advance if you have to miss a week. Two Volunteers are needed to help on Mondays, and one to help on Fridays. They’re also looking for individuals who can’t commit to a weekly (or every other week) shift who will work as part of their sub pool to help when volunteers have to be absent, and can step in last-minute when folks call out sick.
    • Warehouse Support & Distribution Set Up (The Arms of Steel team!)
Volunteers who want to be more active and build/use some muscle can help us keep our warehouse organized, and assist with large donations of bulk items (either receiving or going out!). This is a volunteer gig that benefits from individuals who like engaging in a variety of tasks! Tasks they may support with are varied, but do tend to involve heavy lifting. We ask that any volunteer who is able to help commit to three months of service. Most volunteers help weekly for 2-4 hours. This includes restocking during distribution, setting up for distribution or breaking down at the end of the day.Morning shift volunteers may be sent out on grocery rescue as an assistant if we have a volunteer cancel last minute.

Volunteers may also help with rebagging food from larger containers into smaller ones, help with unpacking returned mail (they get books and baby formula this way), making emergency bags, packing bags for home delivery customers, etc.

Shifts: Monday, Wednesday-Friday from 8:30 or 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 12 to 4 p.m. and Tuesday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

There is a small process to get started that involves a volunteer application, a background check (they work with individuals at risk of hunger and who may be experiencing other trauma, so they cannot accept anyone who has a crime against another person on their record), and a brief interview to assess what they’re most excited about, share more about their culture, and talk schedule.
