The Salvation Army Northwest Division is urgently seeking volunteer bell ringers to staff its iconic red kettles this holiday season, citing a growing demand for assistance across Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana.

The need comes as nearly 28% of Washington families are unable to meet basic needs without government support, according to a 2023 University of Washington study

The organization hopes to raise $3.9 million through its annual Red Kettle Campaign to fund essential services, including food pantries, emergency shelters, transitional housing, rental and utility assistance, addiction recovery programs, and senior and youth support.

“Throughout November and December, our red kettles and bell ringers bring the holiday spirit to life,” said Lt. Colonel Cindy Foley, Northwest Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army. “Without enough volunteers, many families could lose access to shelter, food, and heat during the holidays. We’re incredibly grateful for those who step up to make a difference.”

Volunteers can sign up to ring bells in their communities at RegisterToRing.com. Donations can also be made online at Northwest.SalvationArmy.org.

The organization has a community center at 9050 16th Ave SW in White Center – learn more here.

About The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 when William Booth decided to take his ministry into the streets of London where it would reach the poor, the homeless, the hungry and the destitute. It is now part of the universal Christian Church, and an international organization meeting human needs in 130 countries around the globe. The Salvation Army continues its tradition in King County by serving more than 70,000 people annually, always meeting human needs without discrimination. Among the services offered in this region are food, shelter, addiction recovery, domestic violence aid, youth programs, and disaster relief.
