King County road crews will begin a three-week nighttime paving and safety improvement project on 16th Avenue SW starting Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
The work is part of the 16th Avenue SW Pedestrian Safety and Traffic Calming Project.
Construction will occur overnight Mondays through Fridays from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m., allowing businesses to stay open during regular daytime hours.
The repaving is expected to take approximately 20 nights to complete.
Crews will be grinding and repaving the full width of the roadway at the following locations:
- 16th Avenue SW, between SW 100th Street and SW 107th Street
- SW White Center Cutoff, between SW 100th Street and 17th Avenue SW
- SW 100th Street, between 14th Avenue SW and 11th Avenue SW
Once paving is complete, 16th Ave SW will be re-striped with a new layout that includes bike lanes, a center turn lane, and one travel lane in each direction. The other two roadways will retain their current configurations.
The new striping is designed to enhance safety for all users, especially pedestrians and cyclists. Additional safety upgrades—including curb extensions, flashing crossing lights, and high-visibility signage—will be installed later this summer or early fall.
While construction is underway, residents may notice noise during overnight hours. To help reduce disruption, free earplugs are available (while supplies last) at:
- White Center Library
- The Log Cabin at Steve Cox Memorial Park
- The White Center Food Bank
Earplugs may also be requested by emailing AskLocalServices@kingcounty.gov, with a mailing address included.
Residents are encouraged to visit the King County MyCommute page or the project website for ongoing updates and detour information.
Funny that the community surveys showed the residents did not want lane reductions in this area yet the County did it anyway. Just wait for all the increased road rage and police issues due to the lane reductions and increased traffic. In an area thta is understaffed already with law enforcement. Our tax dollars wasted.
Right on Jessica! You are completely correct! It’s a waste of time and I also voted no and put comments against this idiocy idiot idea that the country had on their survey. So far I can honestly hear sledge hammering at 11:00 pm and I’m trying to sleep and I can hear babies crying when I open my window because they probably have a headache due to the noise. I also have cars speeding down my residential street and an increase in traffic on the residential street I live on. It takes forever to drive to Burien due to the bus lane that they have put in. I don’t understand why fix and change something that has been working fine for the past 30 plus years I have lived in this community.
