A 51-year-old bicyclist died after striking a bridge gate Tuesday on SR 99 at the First Avenue Bridge, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP).

The crash was reported at 11:53 a.m. Tuesday, July 28 at milepost 26.4 on northbound SR 99, according to a WSP press memo.

The agency described the incident as a fatal traffic collision involving a bicyclist and a bridge gate.

According to WSP, the bicyclist was traveling northbound on SR 99 on the pedestrian walkway at the First Avenue Bridge when the bicycle struck the bridge gate. The bicyclist and bicycle came to rest on the pedestrian walkway.

The bicyclist, a Seattle woman, was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where she died, according to WSP. The agency said no helmet was worn,.

WSP listed the cause as intoxication and said drugs or alcohol were involved.
