A person was found dead near a fire in White Center Pond Natural Area on Monday, Oct. 19, prompting a Major Crimes death investigation, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire crews responded to reports of an illegal burn and discovered the body nearby after extinguishing the fire, the sheriff’s office said.

The area appeared to contain an encampment, according to police. Authorities did not say whether the person’s death was connected to the fire.

No arrests have been made.

The King County Sheriff’s Office did not release the person’s identity or a cause of death, which will be released soon by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.
