UPDATE: A driver was seriously injured Thursday afternoon, Jan. 22 in a rollover crash on southbound SR 509 just south of southbound SR 99, a collision that blocked the roadway for about 2 hours and 31 minutes, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Troopers said the driver was ejected and was taken to Harborview Medical Center. The crash involved one vehicle, and no deaths were reported.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reported that all southbound lanes of SR 509 were initially closed due to the collision, with traffic being rerouted onto Myers Way.
How the crash happened, according to the Washington State Patrol:
- A single vehicle was traveling southbound on SR 509 approaching Myers Way.
- The driver attempted to pass another vehicle using the left shoulder.
- The vehicle lost control, crossed all lanes, and hit the barrier on the right shoulder.
- It then spun back across all lanes and hit the barrier on the left shoulder.
- The driver was ejected and came to rest in the center lane.
- The vehicle came to rest in lane four and on the left shoulder.
Drivers were advised to expect delays through the area as emergency crews continued working at the scene. No additional information on the cause of the crash or when all lanes will fully reopen was immediately available.
The State Patrol listed the cause as negligent driving and speed. Troopers said seat belt use was not reported as worn, and it was unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
